Review: Circle of Strangers (Dangerous Strangers Thrillers, #2) by J.T. Ellison

There’s something utterly fascinating about the blend of mundane suburban life with the sharp edges of psychological thrillers. When I stumbled across Circle of Strangers by J.T. Ellison, I was immediately drawn in by the promise of dark secrets lurking just beneath the surface of a seemingly perfect gated community. Little did I know, this was actually a sequel! Fortunately, I quickly learned that my lack of familiarity with the first book wouldn’t hinder my experience. If anything, it only whetted my appetite for more—and I plan to dive into the first installment soon!

At the heart of the story is Camille Prescott, a resilient yet complicated protagonist navigating her new life in Phoenix after escaping a traumatic marriage. As a diagnosed psychopath, Camille is both relatable and intriguingly flawed. Her struggles to maintain normalcy while grappling with her past, especially as disturbing events unfold in her new neighborhood, kept me riveted. The tension amplifies when she encounters Sozi, an overzealous neighbor who complicates Camille’s quest for peace, and an unstable couple, Mara and Oscar, shrouded in unsettling rumors.

Ellison has a knack for crafting multilayered characters who embody the theme of appearances versus reality. I found myself equally frustrated and captivated by the cast; while some were endearing, others were intentionally crafted to keep you guessing. This clever character development added depth to the narrative and ensured I was constantly turning pages to uncover more secrets.

The pacing of the story is spot-on, with short chapters that invigorate the reading experience, making it perfect for those who thrive on quick, cliffhanger moments. Each twist and turn is meticulously woven into a narrative that feels both familiar and fresh. I particularly enjoyed how moments of calm before the storm were cleverly depicted, emphasizing the lurking chaos just waiting to explode. It’s a rollercoaster ride, but one that cleverly allows you to keep your wits about you while the story unfolds.

One line that resonated with me was when Camille reflects, "Sometimes the walls we build to keep out the world can become prisons." It encapsulates the essence of her journey—not merely as a survivor, but as a woman learning to reclaim her life and agency, amidst chaos. It’s a powerful reminder of how the very forces meant to protect us can also imprison us.

To those who appreciated the psychological complexity and gripping suspense of the first book in the series, Circle of Strangers is sure to deliver—a satisfying blend of intrigue, suspense, and character exploration. It’s also perfect for readers who enjoy unexpected plot twists and characters who challenge our perceptions.
