I couldn’t wait to dive into the lives of Sadie, Charlie, Isla, Emily, Ant, Will, Tom, and Vera, and unravel the dark mysteries they carry with them.
Set eighteen months after a tragic trip to British Columbia that left two friends missing, the remaining six are poised for one last hurrah before stepping into adulthood. The premise alone gives you a chill, but it’s the intricacies of the characters and the way their stories unfold that truly hooked me. It’s risky to write with six first-person narrators, yet Cindy manages this feat with a masterful touch. As one character falls victim, the remaining voices grow sharper, allowing their distinct traits to shine through. It’s as if the tension of their current predicament filters through their individual struggles, making them all the more relatable.
Among these characters, Isla stood out to me. She embodies a chaotic energy that’s both frustrating and engaging. Her messiness and unapologetic ambition create a character that feels refreshingly real. This portrayal affects you deeply, especially when you see glimpses into her home life that add layers to her motivations.
