You Belong Here: A Haunting Return to Wyatt College

When I first stumbled upon You Belong Here by Megan Miranda, the duality of its setting caught my eye: a picturesque college nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains, juxtaposed with the shadows of its haunting past. With a captivating blend of nostalgia and dark academia, I couldn’t resist diving into this tale. Little did I know that I would be taken on a whirlwind journey of secrets, accusations, and the complex bonds of family.

The story unfolds at Wyatt College, an institution steeped in tradition but infamous for its chilling hazing ritual known as “The Howling.” The premise is hauntingly intriguing, as we learn that years ago, a tragedy struck during this rite of passage, leaving two local men dead and dragging the name of Beckett Bowery through the mud. Accused as an accomplice to a crime that led to her friend Adalyn Vale’s disappearance, Beckett’s life was irrevocably altered, forcing her to escape the campus and forge a new path. What struck me deeply was how Beckett’s past resurfaces when her daughter, Delilah, unexpectedly enrolls at Wyatt, bringing the old wounds back to life.

Megan Miranda has a remarkable talent for scene-setting. The imagery she evokes transports readers directly into the tense atmosphere of Wyatt College, where the creeping dread of past mistakes lurks just beneath the surface. The character dynamics, particularly between Beckett and Delilah, ring true and evoke a genuine emotional resonance. Their mother-daughter relationship is beautifully depicted, capturing the complexities of trust and fear as Beckett grapples with the reality of her daughter’s choices.

The narrative unfolds in three parts, blending the present with glimpses into Beckett’s traumatic past. I found the pacing to be a bit uneven; while the first two parts lay a rich foundation, the third part picks up dramatically, diving headfirst into a suspenseful climax that kept me on the edge of my seat. I appreciated how Miranda managed to craft a storyline that feels very much adult in nature, even with a backdrop that initially hints at the young adult genre.

Throughout the book, readers are treated to a chilling atmosphere enhanced by the unreliable cell service and the ever-watchful woods surrounding the campus. I couldn’t help but feel a mounting tension, especially as shadows of the past begin to close in on Delilah, making the reader question who—or what—is truly lurking.

Despite the powerful themes of family, trauma, and redemption, I must admit that the college secret trope isn’t my favorite. However, Miranda’s skill made this storyline engaging enough to overlook my reservations. While I’ve enjoyed some of her previous works a bit more, You Belong Here is undoubtedly a compelling, thought-provoking read that might just be perfect for the spooky season ahead.

For anyone who relishes dark academia, suspenseful narratives, or emotionally charged mother-daughter dynamics, this book is a must-read. As we delve into the heart of Wyatt College, we find more than just a story about past horrors; we unearth the profound strength of confronting one’s past. Thank you, Megan Miranda, for this immersive experience—I can’t wait to hear what DeAnn and MaryBeth think in our upcoming buddy read!

You Belong Here is set to be released on July 29, 2025, and I cannot encourage readers enough to add this to their TBRs!
